Surround is an ongoing project that aims to shape an innovative outlet through which waste material can re-enter our habitats and revitalize our spaces.
Surround's initiative started by partnering with Lotuff Leather, a local soft goods manufacturing company, to collect their leather scraps that they would otherwise be paying to send to the landfill.
(processed leather is also an ideal candidate for up-cycling because the material is not easily biodegradable)
Designing and investigating creative reconfigurations of waste material
Utilized the holes and cutouts to redefine the source material as a variation of perforated leather and an element of porosity rather than condemning it as a deficiency or 'lack' of material.
THE REVIVAL - MODULAR ACOUSTIC PANELS
As a shell for acoustic paneling, the scraps are not just being reintroduced as an occupier of space, but as an inhabitant of our environment — a creature enhancing the sound ecosystem of our interior spaces
VISUALIZATION:
Companies typically have showrooms to display an array of their products. But what if there was a way for even their waste to be exhibited in their offices and work spaces? A channel for material waste to fully cycle back to its original 'home'.
Surround is currently working to curate a fully functional, finalized form of acoustic paneling for its leather shells, so that it can begin to find a home!
